Registered users of Latitude’s SkyNode® satcom products who have a WebSentinel service account can now view live and historic flight tracking data, adjust reporting parameters and do two-way text messaging with their SkyNode products using the intuitive interface and high-resolution image quality that Apple® products are known for.

“This updated iOS application is an example of Latitude Technologies’ commitment to provide our customers with the latest in effective information technologies that link operations and maintenance managers to flight crews and aircraft, no matter where they may be,” said Tim Curtis, vice president of information services. “Similar programs are also available for other smartphones and tablet computers, including electronic flight bag (EFB) products.”

Mikey McBryan is the general manager for Buffalo Airways based in Yellowknife, NWT, Canada. Buffalo Airways, known from the popular reality television series “Ice Pilots,” was the first customer to use the new App.

The RC6000A and RC7000A CDUs are cockpit certified to -45C temperatures and feature an intuitive user display with large control buttons for gloved and high vibration operation. Both CDUs interface to existing SkyNode products including our S100, S200 and IONode models. Standard features include pre-programmed messages, telephone address book as well as a soft key multiple use menu structure. These Dzus rail mounted panels are very compact at a mere 3.00/3.75 inches in height and weigh in at less than a pound. The RC6000A VFD display is 2 lines, or 48 characters total and the RC7000A is 5 lines or 120 characters total.  These highly robust displays are currently certified on both Bell and Eurocopter models.

The RC6000A and RC7000A displays will create a new level of user-defined functionality for display as well as control of customer defined and aircraft systems management.  NVIS versions are available upon request.

The MNR team led by Aerial Officer, Colin McFayden, was able to create and send detailed fire reports during aerial scouting missions using the Latitude Messenger and SkyNode satcom system, thereby bypassing any ground based radio congestion. Fire reports were received and integrated into the Provincial GIS database, so that within minutes, Fire Managers had all support information necessary to decide on the type of resources to dispatch including helicopters, water bombers, etc.

As result of the efforts to implement and coordinate this project the MNR team was presented the Diamond Merit Award by Showcases Ontario September 20^th, 2010 in Toronto. The Merit Award honors the MNR team efforts to improve service delivery through field driven innovations and technology.

Key performance indicators and mission summaries were routinely and reliably collected. Drop data, mission duration, retardant quantity and distance travelled were used to determine Salvos per flight hour and retardant quantity per flight hour.  Mission data was also collected to develop costing information related to actual retardant delivered to the fires on a near real time basis.

The Ornge PC-12s are being outfitted with Latitude’s SkyNode® S200-021 dual channel Iridium satellite telephone transceivers. In preparation for the N1US Grand Adventure flight, Latitude’s SkyNode S200-021 satellite voice and tracking equipment and the LWS Sentinel data management system on-board N1US had been sanctioned by the National Aeronautic Association to authenticate the AFF (automatic flight-following) data transmitted during the flight from N1US both to the National Aeronautic Association flight-monitoring desk and to the N1US ground logistics team at the Grand Adventure Coordination Center.

As part of preparing N1US for the flight, Latitude Technologies President, Mark Insley, announced today that Latitude has received notice that the SkyNode S200-021 and the LWS Sentinel data management system have been sanctioned for the flight by the National Aeronautic Association (NAA), the exclusive authority for all US aviation record-setting activity.  The SkyNode S200-021 and LWS Sentinel will be used for authenticating the AFF (automatic flight following) data that will be transmitted during the flight from N1US to NAA as well as to the N1US ground logistics team.  In making the announcement, Mr. Insley commented, “We are very pleased at this recognition by NAA of the tracking accuracy and performance reliability of the SkyNode S200-021 and the Sentinel data management platform.” Insley also took the occasion to applaud the tremendous effort of the Grand Adventure Coordination Center (GACC) team in supporting this record-setting flight.  “The flight-planning and ground logistics for this flight are complex and demand great precision.

In outfitting Chopper 9, Talon chose Latitude’s SkyNode satellite voice, tracking, and 2-way data system for its ability to provide real-time tracking and reporting of position and status of Chopper 9 as it keeps an eye on congested Lower Mainland highway traffic and provides a high aerial view of fast-breaking news stories throughout the region. Talon particularly liked the fact that the LWS Sentinel tracking system will allow any number of authorized users, using any web browser, to simultaneously monitor the over-ground position and other telematics and mission-critical data from designated aircraft.

In a repeat of its 2007 mission, a Martin Mars water bomber, with bird-dog aircraft and ground crew, was dispatched by its owner, Coulson Flying Tankers of Port Alberni on Vancouver Island, in late June to join with the ground and air crews of the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection and the US Forest Service who are working around the clock to contain the hundreds of fires that have blackened more than 800,000 acres of forest, range, watershed, and populated areas across the state.

The Martin Mars and the Cessna 206 Turbine bird-dog rely on Latitude’s SkyNode® S200-011 and LWS Sentinel to handle automatic flight-following (AFF) and real-time web-based tracking of current positioning and trailing flight path of both aircraft. The Martin Mars’ California mission provided a unique and mission-critical opportunity to test the LWS Sentinel event-tracking and mapping application developed by Latitude’s web services team.

Latitude worked closely with Coulson and the Martin Mars support team during initial deployment of the application which is now reporting and mapping in real-time the geo- positioning of the water bomb when it begins to deliver its payload over the fire zone and when it completes delivery. This vital information is being displayed at the US Forest Service fire- fighting command post giving the command post increased capability to precisely target payload drop zones, ensuring maximum payload effectiveness.

Commenting on this important data-tracking development, Mark Insley, Latitude President, said, “Painting the map where fire retardant has been dropped provides the folks at fire coordination centres with more information to help access mission effectiveness and thereby get more efficient use from their valuable air resources. N1US is equipped with Latitude Technologies’ SkyNode® S200-021 satellite voice and tracking system, which played a key role in real-time tracking and reporting of position and status of the helicopter throughout the flight and particularly in the minutes leading up to each refueling stop.

Thanks to the tracking accuracy of the SkyNode S200-021 and the reliability of Latitude’s Sentinel web-based mapping and reporting system, the N1US ground crew was able to feed position and ETA information to each fueling station, and confirm the position of the fuel truck for the flight crew on landing. This allowed for fuel stops as short as only four minutes. Latitude’s Sentinel system also maintained a live-stream data interface to Flight Vector who provided live weather and route planning maps for the ground crew.

Iridium partners Latitude Technologies, Sky Connect, Blue Sky Network, and SkyTrac Systems provided the Iridium equipment and air time. Iridium is a key AFF provider for data and voice communications between the aircraft and the ground. The agencies use Iridium for flight following as well as cockpit voice and data communications.

The AFF system automatically tracks and displays location and other associated information for aircraft on operational missions. Mapping data includes information on cities, tanker base locations, topography, airports, thermal detection, lightning, flight restrictions, and other critical, time sensitive information geographically dispersed users require from dynamic and static sources.

Under visual flight rules (VFR), aircraft on official missions are required to establish positive contact and report aircraft position at least once every 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the agency. The land management agencies used to rely on voice radio reports to flight following dispatchers, who recorded aircraft positions by hand. Frequent lapses in radio communication coverage and aircraft position reporting required pilots to toggle between different radio frequencies for aircraft position reporting. Position reports consumed limited radio “air time,” and increased dispatcher and pilot workloads.

“Through the AFF system, we have been able to increase the aviation program’s efficiency through timelier, more accurate location capabilities,” Roth said. “This is especially valuable when it comes to worst case search and rescue. With AFF we have reduced radio traffic, frequency switching, work levels at dispatch centers and costs.”

Main AFF users come from the fire community, including aircraft dispatchers, fire managers, aviation managers, aircraft vendors, air tanker base ramp managers and aviation contract administrators. Non-fire natural resource aviation users include sketch mappers, marine mammal survey flights, and Alaskan Operations.

The AFF Project team completed a Pilot Phase in 2003 and its First Implementation Phase in 2004. Phase Two of Implementation is in progress and includes training, policy development, hardware acquisition and installation, flight following procedure development and facilitation of other agency and vendor adoption.

The LWS Sentinel service provides a reliable, affordable solution to the processing, storage and retrieval of geo-positioning and telematics data collected and distributed by SkyNode LMC and other custom LMC devices on- board aircraft, ground vehicles and marine craft.  For a one-time implementation fee and a nominal subscription surcharge, the LWS Sentinel service can be upgraded to provide real-time and historic event-driven SMS auto-alerts utilizing telematics data received and processed by LWS Sentinel.
